Dead Pylons and Dark Pathways: EPCOT Lighting Problems Are Getting Even Worse

Since the phased reopening of the reimagined EPCOT, guests have been dazzled by the innovative lighting elements throughout the park. However, as time goes on, it seems that EPCOT’s lighting problems are quickly growing. These issues call into question the park’s overall maintenance and viability of these effects.

EPCOT Entrance Plaza Lighting Problems

The EPCOT entrance plaza, meant to welcome guests with a stunning display of light, is facing numerous problems:

A nighttime view of a large geodesic dome structure, illuminated in blue and purple lights, with sleek modern sculptures in the foreground.
A nighttime scene featuring tall, illuminated flagpoles with colorful flags and a modern, abstract monument with blue and purple lighting, set against a dark background. The area appears to be a public space with some people visible.

Starting with perhaps the most egregious of the issues: the entrance plaza fountain. Two of the three Lucite pylons have gone dark, diminishing the intended visual impact. The return of these pylons was a huge highlight of EPCOT’s overhaul, in the eyes of fans and Disney itself.

A nighttime view of a park area featuring illuminated blue and red fountains with tall, transparent pillars in the background and flags waving in the breeze. Trees and people can be seen around the fountain area.
A brightly lit water feature with circular patterns, illuminated in blue and orange tones, set against a dark background with abstract artworks and structures partially visible.

About half of the entrance plaza fountain lights are either out or malfunctioning. The malfunctioning ones flicker randomly.

A dimly lit modern architectural space featuring a smooth, curved structure with a purple and red light strip along the top, surrounded by lush green plants and a few empty benches.
A modern architectural structure featuring a curved roof illuminated with blue and purple lights, set against a dark night sky.

Multiple sections of accent lighting around the entrance plaza are not functioning. We saw three different sections out, the two pictured sections and a third near stroller rental.

A dimly lit scene featuring a decorative light pole with red and white segments, surrounded by leaves and shrubs. In the background, groups of people are visible, with colorful lights illuminating the area.

Some pathway lighting in the entrance plaza is also out. In the foreground is a nonfunctional light, with a working one in the background.

World Celebration Gardens

One of the most anticipated additions to EPCOT, the World Celebration Gardens, has been plagued by lighting issues since its debut:

A dark pathway with colorful LED lights embedded in the ground, creating a winding, illuminated design.
A curved pavement edge with colorful light reflections, set in a dimly lit environment.

The ground lighting effects, a key feature of the gardens, are almost completely nonfunctional or malfunctioning. This is a problem that has persisted since shortly after the area’s opening and has been well-documented over the last year.

A colorful, illuminated sphere at night, surrounded by people walking and standing in a park-like setting, with trees and modern light structures.
A nighttime scene at a theme park featuring colorful illuminated structures and a large, glowing sphere in the background. People are walking along a curved pathway, with trees and the facade of a building visible behind them.

Half of the centerpiece vertical lights are stuck on bright white, failing to change color in sync with Spaceship Earth’s Points of Light.

A decorative lantern hangs in the foreground, with a colorful, illuminated dome structure blurred in the background under a night sky.
A dense patch of tall, green and striped plants with a dark background, illuminated by soft lighting, creating a nighttime garden atmosphere.

Entire planters of these acrylic accent lights are out. Additionally, miscellaneous lighting fixtures throughout the area are completely non-functional.

Other EPCOT Areas

Lighting problems are not limited to the park’s newest additions. Other areas of EPCOT are also experiencing issues:

A nighttime scene at a theme park featuring a decorative illuminated aquarium mural with colorful fish, surrounded by palm trees and groups of people walking nearby.
Colorful animated fish swimming under a lit archway showcasing the attraction sign "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" in a nighttime setting surrounded by greenery.

The marquee sign for The Seas with Nemo & Friends is completely dark. The only exterior lighting is on the mural bordering the entrance to the attraction.

A brightly lit, multicolored geometric dome structure at night, with a silhouette of a tall pole and lights in the foreground.
Four spotlights mounted on a tall pole, illuminated against a dark sky with a few clouds, and silhouette of palm leaves in the foreground.

Spotlights, floodlights, and pathway lighting in the area all seem to be off at present. We observed multiple parties of guests using their cell phone lights to navigate the area.

A nighttime scene featuring illuminated trees with purple and yellow lighting, alongside modern architectural elements and people walking in an outdoor area. The sky is darkening with twilight.
A crowd of people walks through a dimly lit area at night, surrounded by tall illuminated poles and colorful lighted structures in the background.

Pathway light poles near Guest Relations are out, while some are illuminated and color-change as intended. Two of five lights in this stretch are not working.

A large dome structure illuminated with blue and white lights, creating a star-like pattern against a dark night sky.

Miraculously, most of Spaceship Earth’s 1,800+ Points of Light were working on this evening, aside for a small western-facing section that has been out for several months. However, Spaceship Earth has gone dim on multiple nights over the summer – as recently as this week – where only spotlights functioned for at least part of the night. On those evenings, some or all of the Points of Light shows did not take place.

As EPCOT continues to face these ongoing lighting problems, guests are left wondering when these issues will be addressed. At worst, some of these issues present safety concerns. At best, they’re bad show. The park’s lighting elements play a crucial role in creating the immersive and magical atmosphere that visitors have come to expect from Disney – and EPCOT especially.
