Ex-Disney CEO Bob Chapek Joins Healthcare Co. to “Enhance Customer Experience”

Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek is being brought in as a senior adviser to SCAN Health Care, a not-for-profit organization that supplies Medicare health plans. The move aims to boost the company’s “focus on enhancing customer experience.”

Chapek led Disney from 2020 to 2022, following leadership roles in Disney’s Home Entertainment and Parks & Resources units. He first connected with SCAN Group CEO Sachin Jain, M.D., through their shared board membership at the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Jain believes Chapek’s consumer-focused background makes him ideal for helping SCAN create a member-obsessed culture. The goal is to reimagine member engagement through innovation, advocacy, and strategic partnerships, according to Fierce Healthcare.

Chapek’s Disney Legacy

Bob Chapek’s time at Disney, particularly as Chief Executive Officer, was anything but stable. HIs leadership abilities were called into question numerous times, both by employees of The Walt Disney Company and by investors on Wall Street. Eventually, Chapek was unceremoniously replaced with his predecessor, Bob Iger, in a vote of no confidence by the Board of Directors.

In the years since, both men have pointed fingers at each other for Chapek’s failure as CEO and for the company’s stumbles since the COVID-19 pandemic. Iger has called out Chapek’s aggressive price increases and straying from Disney storytelling in its movie business, amongst other decisions. Chapek says he had a legal claim against Disney and Iger because of the latter’s interference, but decided not to sue because his family is a “Disney family.”

All-in-all, the years with Chapek at the helm were not seen as particularly guest-friendly. As such, bringing him into a company to “enhance the customer experience” would be a puzzling decision to some.

Chapek shared his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I am honored to advise SCAN at this pivotal moment in its 47-year history.” He plans to leverage his background and knowledge to help SCAN build a legacy of exceptional member experiences.
