Disney has announced that the opening of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” has been postponed until summer 2025. The updated show, which replaces the long-running “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, was originally announced to premiere in fall 2024.
A Reimagined Theatrical Production
“The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” is a fully reimagined stage show inspired by the classic 1989 Disney animated film. The production aims to bring new life to the beloved story of Ariel’s journey to become part of the human world through innovative set designs, cutting-edge effects, and a bold new artistic vision.
The show will feature musical numbers from the film, including “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and a new addition, “Kiss the Girl”. It will also include the song “Daughters of Triton,” which was omitted from the previous show.
“Voyage of the Little Mermaid” never reopened after the park’s closure in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Blending the Real and Digital
To create a truly immersive experience, the Disney Live Entertainment team is combining traditional methods with state-of-the-art technology. The show will feature:
- All-new physical sets and puppets
- Live performers
- Cutting-edge digital imagery and motion capture technology for characters like King Triton, Ursula, and Ariel’s sisters
This blend of practical and projected scenic design aims to fill the stage and create a seamless, magical experience for the audience.
Exterior Updates Underway
Despite the delay, work on the project continues. Walt Disney Imagineering recently filed a permit for installing a new marquee at the theater, suggesting that exterior theming updates are progressing even as the interior show elements are being refined.
As the summer 2025 opening draws closer, fans can expect more updates and sneak peeks into this highly anticipated reimagining of a Disney classic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
